Winter is knocking at the door

As I sit here there are wet snowflakes falling outside my window.  While the rest of the valley is groaning at the October snowfall, excitement is building in our house. Will there be enough to play in later?!  Only time will tell (although the forecast makes me skeptical).

We are lovers of snow around here. I know that very well may change as winter goes on and on and on...but for now we may as well enjoy the thrill of the first snow.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

winter fun

These are from before Christmas, but once again, better late than never.

our overflowing garden

One of our very first projects when we moved into this house in May was to tear up one quarter of our grass and plant a garden.  Our first big garden: about 250 square feet.  I am so thankful we took the time to get our garden in.  We have been enjoying the fruits of our labours for a couple months already, with plenty more to come.

right at the beginning

Although it seemed way too spread out initially, we realize now that our garden is actually way too dense.  And there are several plants we should be pruning back, and we haven't (yet).

just starting off

This year we "cheated" in that we bought many of our plants as 1"-4" babies at the garden store.  It seemed less risky for our first try at a big garden.  We planted our carrots, spinach, onions, and green onions from seed.  The rest was from seedlings (is that the right term?): pumpkin, tomatoes, kale, leeks, acorn squash, butternut squash, green beans, zucchini, and cucumbers.

We are definitely still learning, but have had great success this year, due mostly to the large amount of mushroom manure we used?!  Either way, we're so enjoying eating our own garden-fresh produce this summer.  I've also enjoyed learning how to preserve our harvest for the winter.  So far I have made 4 jars of pickles (many, many more to come as they keep producing) and frozen 5 bags of blanched leeks.  I'm hoping to make one big batch of salsa once our tomatoes are ripe.

Stewart and I have really enjoyed spending our evenings working in the garden together, and Micah loves to help us weed on the weekends.  (It helps that our weeds are huge and plentiful!)

I called this our 'overflowing garden', and it's so true.  Not only have we had an abundant harvest, but our pumpkin plant has very much overflowed onto our grass.  By several feet.  Now we know not to plant it in the middle of the garden!

I scream, you scream!

Today Micah and I tried out the new ice cream maker attachment for our KitchenAid mixer, that I was given for Christmas.  Until now my freezer has been too full of food, ready for after the baby was born, to fit the ice cream mixer bowl.  Finally, we've eaten down our supply of freezer meals enough to freeze the bowl and make our own ice cream.  Yum!

We made this recipe for Chocolate Coconut Milk Ice Cream.  It was so delicious; we will definitely be making it again.

Micah agrees.

As does Halle.

our first outing

...as a family of five.  And Jackson's first ever trip out of our house.  Twenty minutes at the park.  And we drove the very short distance, instead of walking.  It was just nice to get some fresh air and let the kids run, even if it was brief.  Besides that, brief is about all I can handle at this point.

overdue at the zoo.

40 weeks + 2 days

We decided to get out of the house today, away from thoughts of the impending birth, and enjoy some time at the zoo with our kids.

the pond at the zoo was frozen! so rare for here.

So glad we went!  What a great day of family fun ... hopefully our last as a family of four!

snow day

A couple weeks ago (was it really that long ago already?) we had a snow day.  Micah was incredibly excited to go out and play, and Halle wasn't so sure about it all.

 So while Micah played...

 ...Halle mostly just sat

and got snowed on.

A big thank you to Auntie Amanda who came over to play outside with the kids, so this pregnant Momma didn't have to.

O Christmas Tree

Only two weeks late... photos of our annual visit to the Christmas tree farm!  This year we took Uncle Jake with us, while Auntie Maisie was out of town.

a real vacation

Blue skies, blue water, waves lapping on the shore, and grandparents eager to play and help with the kids.  It was five days of bliss!  Micah loved being so close to the ocean, going for walks with his Mamma and Bapa (what he calls my parents), throwing rocks in the water, and helping wash the dishes!  I loved not helping with the dishes, watching my parents play with my kids, watching Micah and Halle explore their new surroundings, and just how relaxing the whole time was.  Halle, I think she just loved getting dirty and eating dirt.  She's like that.  :)  As for Stew... you'll have to ask him.

Micah had such fun with his Bapa!  He went through Bapa withdrawal when we got home.
