my boy is sick

It's been a while coming.  First, 3-4 days ago, just not eating as much as normal.  (As in 5 bites of pancake for breakfast, instead of his usual 2 scrambled eggs and a banana!)  Then the diarrhea began.  And general crankiness.  A slight fever yesterday led us to the doctor to rule out malaria.  And now a miserable boy today.

Unfortunately the doctor didn't rule out malaria.

He did a blood test and the results came back with a very very low levels of malaria.  Which as far as we understand basically means that there are eggs present, but no active malaria yet.  Which explains why the result is positive, but he's not really that sick, other than diarrhea.  So we're treating him for malaria to be on the safe side (you don't mess with malaria!), and for the diarrhea, and for parasites, which are the likely cause of the diarrhea.  Poor boy.  He hates taking his medicine!

Late this afternoon I offered Micah some leftover pasta, hoping he'd eat some, but not expecting much.  He did eat several, out of my hand, us both sitting/standing on the kitchen floor.

Then he began to feed me.

Which I don't normally go for, but hey, the kid was eating.  So I ate the noodles he stuck up to my mouth, and he kept eating and eating.

By the end of it we both had tomato sauce all over our faces.  And arms.  And clothes.  But my boy ate real food!  A lot more than he has at one sitting in a while.

Tonight we gave him his first dose (out of two) of his diarrhea treatment.  It was a powder we had to mix with juice for him to drink.  (The doctor suggested we mix it with green tea!  The locals all drink green tea, and they give it to their kids, so why not, hey?!  We, on the other hand, do not give Micah green tea.  So juice, it was.)  We called it his "special drink".  It was really sweet, and at first he spit it out.  He's never really had juice before and I think was a bit taken aback.  In the end he liked it, but would only have a small sip at a time.

Then of course right before bed he was so wired!  He's really not used to that much sugar!  But Stewart sure had fun playing with him and trying to wear him out for bed.  :)
